It’s been so long...

A Statement from Brian:

"I had been toying with the instrumental part of the song since about 2015. It wasn't until recently that I thought up some verses that I felt finally really fit. A lot of my music or song scraps will remain instrumental for a while, and I like to hang onto the ideas for as long as possible. I consider all my music perpetually incomplete. This song specifically began to take its final form during early quarantine, and the lyrics come from subconscious journaling/freewriting. I write and play music mainly for my own personal growth and catharsis. However, if I could inspire one person to spontaneously record something, it would be immeasurably more worth it.

Melon Season is mostly just what I call my own personal recording project, currently based around Urbana and Chicago, IL. The project started around 2015, and it has been loosely ongoing ever since. The DIY and lofi ideals/recording methods of the Velvet Underground, Daniel Johnston, CAN, and Duster are among the most inspirational to me. The music of early Modest Mouse, Built to Spill, Pavement – and even music from the Zelda series – are very influential on the style. I am constantly writing, so I record all the songs on my own, while they're fresh and exciting, in order to make room in my head for the next ones; hopefully before I forget anything specific, really. Every once in a while I get a pretty good take of something (the best takes are the ones that accurately capture the feeling/energy – not the most technically perfect), so I usually organize those into albums that I suppose make up a similar feel. The songs become like little puzzle pieces to a bigger picture. This is just a passion and hobby that I would be pursuing no matter what. I usually collaborate on recordings with my brother, drummer, James. However, I highly encourage all collaboration with anyone at any time. Ideally, I wish to release everything for free into the world and people can do with it as they wish. Music is just ideas, and ideas are meant to be shared."
