Behind-The-Scenes Memories From The Set of the Treasured Comedic Parody

MALIBU, CA (March 16, 2020) – Celebrating the 40th anniversary of the groundbreaking comedic parody Airplane!, CurtCo Media’s Hollywood Unscripted podcast for film lovers will honor the legendary and often-quoted movie with a special episode debuting on March 16.

Recorded at CurtCo’s Malibu studios, Hollywood Unscripted features funny and revealing interviews with star Robert Hays and one of the iconic film’s writer/directors, David Zucker. The podcast will be accessible to movie fans via all major platforms, including Apple, Stitcher, Spotify, Google Play, and TuneIN as well as on CurtCo.com.

Released by Paramount Pictures, Airplane! generated worldwide attention through its revolutionary satirical take on the 1957 film Zero Hour, starring Dana Andrews, Linda Darnell and Sterling Hayden. Written and directed by the famed slapstick comedy trio Zucker, Abrahams and Zucker, the $3.2 million budgeted Airplane! grossed $158 million worldwide.

Along with its financial success, the film earned a Writers Guild of America Award for Best Adapted Comedy as well as nominations for the Golden Globe Award for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy and for the BAFTA Award for Best Screenplay. But those significant accomplishments didn’t come as a surprise to Director David Zucker.

“When we conceived the idea in 1975, we actually did believe that it was going to be a big hit,” Zucker fondly recalls. “Truth be told, we were not surprised when it did. What was a surprise and what we couldn’t predict was how long it would last. We couldn’t have imagined that 40 years later, Bob and I would be at a screening at the Castro Theatre with 1,400 screaming fans, giving the same incredible reaction we had back in 1980.”

That sentiment was shared by Hays, who remembered being impressed with the script immediately. “There was something on every page that made me laugh out loud, so I was really hoping I would get the part,” says Hays, whose portrayal of passenger-turned-pilot Ted Striker marked his film debut. “I also remember doing the screen test with Julie (Hagerty), which was great for both of us, as it showed the chemistry.”

The 40th anniversary of Airplane! podcast marks the latest installment in CurtCo’s Hollywood Unscripted, which offers a series of intimate conversations with A-list actors, writers, directors, and producers who create the world’s most memorable films and television shows. Hosted by Malibu Film Society Co-founder and Executive Director Scott Tallal, Hollywood Unscripted has already included interviews with actors Alfre Woodard, Tracy Letts and Kyle MacLachlan as well as Producer Irwin Winkler and Avengers: Endgame Directors Anthony and Joe Russo.
